Belly Dance Courses - FAQs

What to wear in a belly dance class?

Don't worry, you don't need to show your belly if you don't feel comfortable with that. Instead, wear a fitting top (not a loose T-shirt!) as it will show your movements better and this way you can see best if you are doing a movement correctly.

Wearing trousers is better than a skirt (but no jeans) as it will again show the movements better. If you want to accentuate your hips, you can wear a coinbelt or a hip scarf.

Belly dance is danced barefoot. A few good links to find suitable dance clothing can be found on the links page.

Is taking up belly dancing a good way to get fit?

Absolutely! There are two core elements that work towards a fitter, healthier body.

First of all, the class is a low impact exercise class. This means that you are working on fat burning, rather than cardio.

Secondly, the body isolations that are taught in a belly dance class help to tone up the core muscles, which is very effective to reduce lower back pain and get a better posture all together. You will find that you get more toned in the arms and shoulders, abs, waist, legs, etc without feeling that you just had a hardcore session in the gym.

Who comes to a belly dance class?

Anyone above 14 years old can join the classes. Belly Dance is not only for women and men are welcome to join the classes as well.

You do not have to be of a certain age or size to join the class. Belly Dance is appropriate for women all ages and sizes.

If you are worried about taking up an exercise class for health reasons, please contact your GP.

Are pregnant women able to join the class?

The classes are not aimed at pregnant women, and some of the exercises are not really suitable.

However, the belly dance basics class is a low impact exercise class and the movements are therefore less intense and could be suitable for pregnant women if slightly adapted.

Please contact your GP to see if you can join a class.

What if I miss a class, could I get a refund?

Sorry, Hilde’s policy is no refunds/no transfers. However, if you miss a class you can catch up for the class you missed on a different day as long as this happens before the course is finished.

When can I move up a level from the Belly Dance Basics?

The belly dance basics course is designed to give you a breakdown of all basic body isolations that you need in Tribal Fusion (TF) Egyptian Fusion (EF) and American Tribal Style(ATS). There is a 3 term rotation system where the basic movements of each style will be covered. It is important to finish those three terms before moving onto the next course.

I have previous (belly) dance experience; do I still need to take Belly Dance basics?

If you are a dancer but don’t have much belly dance experience it is still recommended to take the belly dance basics course for the duration of 2-3 terms. You will probably be able to pick up the movements fairly quickly, if you are an experienced dancer, however, you are still learning a very different technique from any other dance style.

It is important to get the basics right, so you can make sure that you can build on a good foundation.

For people that have previous experience in belly dance, it’s hard to tell. Hilde’s technique is very different than most Egyptian dance teachers, since she incorporates techniques of other dance styles as well. If you wish to have a fresh start, it is better that you take the basics course.

If you are not in the correct level you can always move up or down at any time if that is needed.

Where can I find suitable music/DVD’s to practise at home?

Hilde recommends to go to aladdinscave.com as they have a large variety of music and DVD’s that are suitable to help you with your practise.

They are a UK based company and send all your orders first class on the same day, so the service is excellent.

There are a few more sites to visit: Please go to the links page for more information.
